The Office of the Superintendent Registrar holds all birth, adoption, stillbirth, marriage and death records in Jersey, from August 1842 to the present day. And all civil partnership records from April 2012 to the present day.

Public Research Appointment Times

Monday – Friday 2:00pm to 4:30pm by appointment.

Terms and conditions for appointments

Appointments are of 60 minutes duration. Double appointments are not available.

Appointments must be made in advance by telephone or email and are subject to availability.

Appointments are one to one with a dedicated member of staff who can provide assistance or guidance to the researcher.

Researchers may request a maximum of 20 registers to be prepared in advance of the appointment.

Once you have made an appointment you will receive further information on how to request records in advance of your appointment. We require the name, date and Parish to be able to access the correct registers for your appointment.

Bookings cannot be transferred to another person.

Other public appointments may be taking place within the office during the period of the booking, including ceremonies and public registration.

Pencil only to be used when making notes.

Strictly no photographs can be taken of the registers.

Indexes to the OSR registers

You can request to look at the marriage, civil partnership and death indexes during your appointment. Certain birth indexes are open to viewing and others will require prior checking by staff to ensure they do not relate to restricted records.

Copies of some of the OSR indexes are available upstairs in the Public Library and at the Jersey Archive.

Où Mariés (Where married)

The ‘Où Mariés’ are handwritten volumes arranged by dates of birth of children born in Jersey, between June 1850 – April 2002. Also recorded are child’s names (up until May 1968, then just male or female and place of marriage is recorded) names of parents and very usefully, where they were married in Jersey or elsewhere in the world.

Which entries have restricted access?

In some circumstances there is restricted access to individual birth records.

Adoption records are not available, unless being accessed by the adopted child and authorisation has been received by the Superintendent Registrar from the Fostering & Adoption Service.

All stillbirth, marriage, civil partnership and death records are public records and can be made available.

You can request a copy of the following certificates:

Birth, adoption, stillbirth, marriage, civil partnership, conversion to marriage, conversion to civil partnership and death.

You will need to provide as much information as possible about the certificate you need including full names, dates, Parish, name of Church. A copy certificate takes 7-10 working days to produce.

If you cannot provide the date and Parish of who the certificate is relating to, there will be an additional charge of £33.12 for our staff to locate the record. 

The Office of the Superintendent Registrar does not hold baptism records.

Certificate Costs 2025

A standard certificate costs £33.12 and a short form certificate (only available for birth certificates) costs £11.04.

If a certificate is needed urgently, an Express Certificate can be produced for £66.24
