Censuses & other lists

Over time different censuses have been taken of livestock, houses etc, but this page covers only those relating to people.

‘Extente’

Although not a census as we know them today, it is a record of rents and other dues paid to the King or Queen by the tenants of Crown possessions in Jersey.

Other Censuses/Lists

1696 - All males were asked to sign the 'Oath of Association' in support of the King.  The roll is held in England, but a member of the JFHS, Mr Alex Glendinning, has compiled a book listing the scrolls containing the signatures or marks of the males.  He named males where it was legible.  This is a great source for the family historian and can be accessed at all the research centres or bought in our bookshop here.

1793 - 'French Refugees' - a list of French refugees arriving in Jersey, mainly from Brittany, a few from Normandy, commencing 1793 . This can be found on microfilm at the Société Jersiaise under copy 1994-0080 MF_FRE (held in the glass cabinet with the Almanacs).

1799 - Parish of St Lawrence census (this is the only parish known to have this census data, which is held at the Société Jersiaise).  A copy of this census is also held in our collection at the Jersey Archive - Jersey Family History Society under the category 'Parishes'.

1806 - General Don’s (Governor of Jersey) Military Census taken during the Napoleonic War.  This gave the number of men available and their names.   JFHS holds a file with the census data in our collection at the Jersey Archive.   This will be put on this website in due course.

1815 - General Don’s (Governor of Jersey) Military Census - this census gave men’s names, their rank in the Jersey Militia and the number of women and children living in the household.  The JFHS holds a file with the census data in our collection at the Jersey Archive - this will shortly be put on this website

Full Censuses

The following censuses have been transcribed by the JFHS and are available in person at our collection within the Jersey Archive.  Indices of these censuses are also available at our shop.  

These censuses can also be accessed through Ancestry or  Find My Past , but have not been manually transcribed, so surnames may not have been read accurately by the computer inputters.  If you cannot find your surname on the censuses, then we advise putting in three letters of your surname when searching, as this may bring up further data.

1841 - taken on the 6th June - first census to list the names of every individual.  However, less information was collected in 1841 than in later census years. 

1851- taken on the 30th March.   

1861 - taken on 7th April.  

1871 - taken on 2nd April

1881 - taken on 3 April

1891 - taken on 5th April

1901 - taken on 31st March

1911 - taken on 2nd April

1921 - taken on the 19th June.    

1939 - taken on the 29th September.  Although not a Jersey census, it is thought that a link to this UK registration  would prove useful for families who left Jersey before the start of the occupation.  This is a free registration and can be accessed here on Find my Past.

1943 - Taken in October.  A voluntary census took place of all those families who were refugees in the UK during the German occupation of Jersey.  More details can be found on this website under Occupation Registration Cards.

Unavailable Censuses 

These censuses were not taken -

1931 - Unfortunately, because of a fire where the records were held in the UK, all names on the census were lost.  However, other census data have survived.

1941 - Jersey was under German occupation, and accordingly, a census was not taken.  However, the occupying forces required everyone to carry an identity card, and the centrally held official copies have survived.  More details can be found under Occupation Registration Cards
